2019 Habitat Birmingham Construction Opportunities

About This Campaign

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Habitat Birmingham.

This is an open opportunity for volunteers willing to serve on projects with the greatest need. Volunteers may participate in new house construction or repairs on an existing home.

Construction Days:
Volunteers participate in house construction Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 8 am to 3 pm. Volunteers must be 14 years old or older to be on the construction site.

No prior construction experience is necessary. Habitat Construction Site Supervisors lead and instruct volunteers.

On Site Provisions:
Water, portable toilets, construction materials, hard hats, tools, and work supervision are provided;
Lunch, snacks or transportation are not provided.

What to Bring:
Lunch, sunscreen and/or hat, water bottle.

What to Wear:
Clothing must be appropriate for construction activities. Do not wear open-toed shoes or sandals, large earrings or over-sized clothing.

In the event of inclement weather or other construction questions contact the Construction Site Supervisor directly.

Habitat reserves the right to remove any volunteer from the work site if, in the opinion of a Habitat staff member, the volunteer acts in a manner that creates risk of injury or harm to that volunteer or others.

Campaign to Support Habitat for Humanity Greater Birmingham

HabitatBirmingham builds and repairs homes in partnership with low-to-moderate incomefamilies to support affordable housing and disaster recovery needs inJefferson, Shelby, Walker, and St. Clair counties.


 Houses are not givenaway;

 Zero percent financingis offered to qualified families for new and repaired homes;

 Applicants qualifybased on three criteria: (1) need for quality, affordable housing; (2)  willingness to partner with HabitatBirmingham (minimum 300 “sweat equity” hours and 10 hours of home ownershipeducation workshops); and, (3) ability to repay a no interest mortgage;

 $85,000 is the averagecost of new house construction (including land);

 $500 is the averagemonthly mortgage payment (varies based on house size, taxes, etc.);

 Families are required,and the general public is welcome, to attend education and repair workshopsinstructed by volunteers with expertise in financial planning, insurance, etc.;

 Ranks in top 15 out ofmore than 1,400 Habitat affiliates in the US by Habitat for Humanity International;

 Recognized as top 15home builders in the Birmingham area by the Birmingham Business Journal (rankedby number of building permits).
